About Els Opsomer

Biography

Els Opsomer (°1968, Ghent, BE), living and working between Brussels (BE) and Rufisque (SE), is an internationally acclaimed visual artist, video maker and photographer. Her artwork is an artistic reinterpretation of globalised reality, exposing and challenging notions of personal integrity through images and videos. The core of her work originates in a constantly expanding archive of urban images (“Archive Building, created in 2009”) that the artist collected in her years of travelling all over the world, including to conflict zones such as Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh (1992), the Balkans (Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, 1998), Bulgaria (1998), Romania (1998), Palestine (2002, 2007, 2009), and Jordan (2007). She was an artistic resident at the Rijksakademie Amsterdan (NL) and has received a number of prestigious awards during her career such as “Prix de la jeune peinture belge, E. Langui” (1997, Brussels, BE) and the “Courtisane” film award (2007, Ghent, BE).  She has participated in famous international exhibitions for contemporary art such as the 4th Lubumbashi Biennale (2015, RDC), 12th Istanbul Biennale (2012, TU), the 1st Brussels Biennale (2008, BE), 7th Gwangju Biennale (2008, CO) and 5th Werkleitz Biennial (1993, GE). She worked as a lecturer at the art school “La Cambre”, Brussels (BE), DNA, Den Haag, (NL), ISBA Besançon (FR), Luca School of Arts, Antwerp (BE) and is currently head of the Masters program “Photography” at the Luca School of Arts, Brussels (BE).
