The equipment shown in the middle of the room is a seismograph, a device that quantifies the magnitude of an earthquake according to the Richter scale. The Richter scale, developed in the 1930’s, is a base-10 logarithmic scale, which defines magnitude as the logarithm of the ratio of the amplitude of the seismic waves to an arbitrary, minor amplitude. “Richter” also refers to the work of contemporary artist Gerhard Richter – best known for his “blurred” images – who was classically trained as a painter just like Tom. Following Gerhard Richter’s example, Tom succeeds in producing a “blurred” collage by using different layers of black and white. Unlike most of his collages which are very smooth, almost perfect images, this collage is the magnificent result of an artistic experiment. In the words of the artist: “creating this work was a real challenge both at the level of the image and at the Richter scale”.
