Cotopaxi

About this work

This work was made on the occasion of the exhibition “Le Grand Tour” held at the Museum of Contemporary Arts – MAC’s of Grand-Hornu in 2008. Here Bustamante continues his Panoramas series, whose starting point is not photography, but a drawing realized spontaneously with colored felts. The contours of the Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in Ecuador, with the shape of a perfect cone, which was then photographed and mechanically translated via the technique of lithography. Composed of superimposed layers of monochrome flat surfaces, this Panorama reveals an immaterial and lived experience of transparency and color.

About this artist

Mac’s

The MAC’s is housed within the former Grand-Hornu colliery, a monument of European industrial heritage that was designated as UNESCO world heritage in 2012. Since the museum opened in 2002, it has welcomed over a million visitors, produced more than 85 exhibitions and promoted numerous artists from the region. Thanks to such major international artists as Anish Kapoor, Christian Boltanski, Guiseppe Penone and Tony Oursler, who presented their first major Belgian exhibitions here, the reputation of the MAC’s now extends well beyond Belgium’s borders. Drawing inspiration from the unique architecture and history of the Grand-Hornu site, its collection explores themes that have caught the attention of numerous contemporary artists, including memory, technology and community. Every day, the MAC’s offers free guided visits to its exhibitions. The entry ticket also provides access to the historic site of the former colliery and the design exhibitions organized by the CID, the Centre for Innovation and Design.
