This lithograph was produced on the occasion of the exhibition “Le Tableau des Eléments”, held at the Museum of Contemporary Arts- MAC’s Grand-Hornu in 2005. Framing, symmetry, perspective, and polarity are all aspects of Peter Downsbrough’s diverse practice: here he uses the straight lines of a square, whose corner is superimposed on the word OPTION, inverted as if to suggest many possible readings, so that our perception and location of space are modified.
Peter Downsbrough (°1940) is an American artist born in New Brunswick (New Jersey, USA), and lives in Brussels (BE) since 1989. Peter Downsbrough’s work deals with the complex relationship between architecture, typography, and linguistics. His work isn’t about the object or the material. It is about itself and its relation to the environment.
The MAC’s is housed within the former Grand-Hornu colliery, a monument of European industrial heritage that was designated as UNESCO world heritage in 2012. Since the museum opened in 2002, it has welcomed over a million visitors, produced more than 85 exhibitions and promoted numerous artists from the region.
