My last meal***
About this work
The Department of Justice in the State of Texas, in the United States, publishes (on the Internet) the last meals requested by those condemned to death before their execution. In response to this controversial publication, Patrick Guns’ project My Last Meals *** presents these last meals to great chefs, with the intention that their culinary art would once again bring the executed prisoners back “to the side of life “. Each chef chose his dish freely and thus paid tribute to the human being condemned to death- giving dignity that the American Justice took away. In reality, the requested last meals are rarely delivered to the condemned, who are only offered the usual canteen food, but are, with their agreement, almost always published. The menus are generally not very sophisticated and often suggest popular tastes that are sometimes thought to be anchored in childhood. Their composition and layout on the plate (in the arrangement of flavor and color) are worthy of a final portrait: tragic and ridiculous in the face of death, while at the same time they testify to a somber stance against capital punishment.
