About this work

Michel Couturier’s drawings are characterized by reduction. The final image is usually a simplification or detail from a greater reality: the public space. Most of the time the public space is recognizable, although road signs and pylons can suggest forests and can turn parking places into places of alienation. The result is a series of fascinating drawings where we can observe a shadow of a figure, produced in black ink, silver or gold.

Michel Couturier

Michel Couturier (°1957, BE) is a Belgian multi talented artist who works and lives in Brussels. He works with video and photography and expresses himself in both drawing, painting and printing. Michel Couturier appropriates an object and transforms it into a creative item. His artistic gesture has the value of a testimony and a critical point of view. He does this in an analytical way: through transformation and metamorphose of the existing reality. In his work, Couturier addresses the social reality of the suburbs and the ethnic-cultural tensions. The result is at the same time unrecognizable and identifiable for the viewer. Michel’s Couturier’s work has been exhibited several times at home and abroad: from Buenos Aires over Berlin to Brussels.
