About this work

The inspiration for the cyclist image came from one of the notebooks of the artist’s schizophrenic godfather – which were found after the godfather’s death in one of his drawers. The notebook contained notes and pictures of Rik van Looy, a famous Belgian cyclist in the sixties, presented here as a sophisticated and well-off citizen sitting behind his desk in a stylish interior. The connection between the embellished picture of the cyclist as a “real bourgeois” and the compulsive excessive self image of the artist’s godfather as a result of his mental disorder is manifest in the work. A tribute and warm farewell to the artist’s beloved godfather.
