Frédéric Penelle

Biography

Frédéric Pénelle, winner of the 2005 edition of the Prix de la Gravure at La Louvière (BE), is a Belgian artist born in 1973. He studied etching techniques at the National School of Visual Arts ‘La Cambre’ in Brussels (BE) with a focus on lithography and the use of modern technologies for printing. Like a competent puppeteer, he manipulates and reshapes history in his own particular way. Starting from different historical documents he uses these as an inspiration to create etchings on wood, which he cuts in black and white, glues and then assembles to bring to life magnificent sculptures surrounded by a poetic and hybrid universe.
