François Schuiten

Biography

Born in Brussels (BE) in 1956, François Schuiten is a Belgian cartoonist and comic book illustrator at the St Luc Institute in Brussels. He worked with his brother Luc, Claude Renard, and since 1981, with Benoît Peeters for the series “The Dark Cities”.

His work was praised for its graphic richness and the originality of his narrative conception  at the International Comics Exhibition in Angoulême in 1985. His works are installed in the public space of Brussels and Paris. Schuiten’s images reveal a world in which both realistic and utopian architecture hold a primordial place. In this imposing setting, the actions of the characters, although often emblematic, appear almost derisory.
